Required Building Permits

Some of the more common projects that require one or more permits include:

  • Additions or alterations
  • Air conditioners (central) installation or replacement
  • Basement finishing
  • Concrete or brick paver patios and other similar hardscape surfaces
  • Decks or gazebos
  • Fences (check your subdivision regulations)
  • Furnace
  • Garage/shed (detached)
  • Hot water tank
  • Landscape/lawn sprinklers
  • Pools
  • Re-roofing
  • Siding or re-siding
  • Signs (use building permit application)
  • Tents greater than 200 square feet (non-residential uses)
  • Window replacement

You must apply for your building permit from the Building Division. This will take 10 to 15 business days to review construction plans. If you must make corrections to the construction plans, approval will require an additional 3 to 5 days.

Complaints against builders are handled by the Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry Services/Enforcement Division. Complaints must be written and signed. If the complaint is against a residential or maintenance and alteration contractor the complaint must be filed within 18 months of completion, occupancy, or purchase, whichever occurs later.
