Following MCL 28.422, a License to Purchase (LTP) is required to purchase, or otherwise acquire, a firearm. An exception to this law is persons who have a current Concealed Pistol License (CPL).

In order to apply for a LTP, a Northville Township resident may set up an appointment with the Records Bureau by calling 248.662.1223. Valid identification is mandatory. A background check is conducted, and if the individual does not have any disqualifiers, a license will be issued. The process typically takes a half hour to complete. Once the LTP is used, it is returned back to the Township records bureau for registry into the MSP Firearms database.

It is the seller’s responsibility to turn the license in to Northville Township after the transaction. Firearm Sales Records are forms used only if the purchaser has a CPL or MCOLES number. Firearm Sales Records are to be turned into the seller’s local police or sheriff department.

CPL- Concealed Pistol Licenses are processed by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Information on how to obtain one can be found the Michigan State Police.
