This furry friend made history when he joined Northville Township Police Department in October 2022. Max, a Goldendoodle, is the Department’s inaugural canine.
He’s amassed quite a fan club quickly. He’s often the most popular guest at area schools, the senior center, community events and around town. While it might be because of his gentle temperament, having the softest hair in town is part of his charm.
His most important work is as a therapy dog. He received special training to handle this important job. He is there to offer comfort, aid and support to anyone who would like it. In times of crisis, particularly during violent or traumatic events, he reduces anxiety. When people spend time with him, they often relax and talk more about what they witnessed, regardless if they are adults or children. This helps with the investigation.
Police officers benefit from Max, too. As a first responder, assisting people daily exposes officers to trauma on the job. Some days are rough. Max senses those tough moments and is quick to console.
While Max is everyone’s best buddy, Community Service Officer Andrew Domzalski is his handler. He accompanies him to work daily and heads home with him after hours. It’s a special bond.
Max’s name is of Latin origin. It means “the greatest.” That’s how we feel about him at the Northville Township Police Department.
