Northville Township, MI
Home MenuPathways Plan
The Township has a comprehensive plan for the development of pedestrian pathways throughout the Township. Currently, the Township has approximately 28 miles of hard surfaced public pathways which are located along the main north/south and east/west roadways. In addition, many neighborhoods have sidewalks and internal pathways within open spaces.
The overall plan is to create pedestrian connections along all main roads in the Township, as well as connect parks, schools, public facilities, the City of Northville and to adjacent communities.
The primary mechanism for the construction of new pathways is in conjunction with new development or redevelopment of existing projects. Developers are required to install pathways along their road frontage in locations that are designed on the township’s pathway plan. As resources become available, the township will review feasibility of potential projects and work to fill gaps in the pathway system.
7 Mile Pathway Project (Updated 4/1/26)
Following the pre-construction meeting, the Seven Mile pathway project is moving forward, with the route now staked and construction expected to begin within the next one to two weeks. Initial work will include tree clearing, scheduled for this week, along with contractor mobilization of equipment and materials. Staging will take place at the abandoned hospital parking lot located along Seven Mile Road, east of the new Essential Services Complex.
During construction, the eastbound lane of Seven Mile Road will be temporarily closed, with traffic shifted to the center lane to maintain two-way travel. While access will remain open in both directions, motorists should anticipate potential delays due to traffic volumes.
The project will be completed in two phases. Phase 1 includes construction of the pathway from the new Fire Station west to the intersection of Seven Mile and Northville Road, with completion anticipated by the end of August. Phase 2 will extend from that intersection north to Seven Mile and South Main Street, then west to connect with the existing pathway into Hines Park, with completion expected by the end of November.
This 10-foot-wide regional pathway links Legacy Park to the Farmers Market, downtown Northville pathways and Hines Park. It’s an elaborate project that we will be managing in coordination with MDOT and Wayne County. The project includes complex elements such as a railroad crossing, a stream crossing, a wetland crossing and two intersections with modernized signalization. To add this amenity, Northville Township received $2.1 million in grants from both MDOT and the Michigan DNR.
